Popcorn Sutton's Tennessee White Whiskey
We had several requests for this before I could find out where we could get some. It's one of the more interesting stories in the business. Marvin "Popcorn" Sutton (pictured at right) was an Appalachian Moonshiner originally from Maggie Valley, North Carolina. Sutton considered moonshine production a legitimate part of his heritage, being as he was Scots-Irish and descended from a long line of moonshiners. Needless to say, the Feds did not agree. His rap sheet included; repeat offender of liquor laws, possession of an unregistered still, having distilling apparatus and untaxed liquor, and weapons possession by a convicted felon. Unfortunately, this American original passed away in 2009.
In late 2010, Hank Williams, Jr. and Popcorn's widow Pam Sutton formed a partnership to distill and distribute Sutton's whiskey legally for the first time. Dubbed "Popcorn Sutton's Tennessee White Whiskey," it is produced on stills designed by Sutton prior to his death, using his secret family recipe and techniques. Just as you would expect, the whiskey is packaged in mason jars and sells for $29.99 per 750 ml. In case you are interested, the nickname "Popcorn" apparently comes from an incident in a bar sometime in the late 60's or early 70's when he allegedly damaged a bar's faulty popcorn vending machine with a pool cue.
